UWCEA CORAL REGENERATION
PROJECT

Take Action Now

OUR CONSERVATION MOVEMENT

Rebuilding the Coral Reef on the Coast of Tanzania

The coast has been greatly affected by dynamite fishing and there is a huge amount of coral that are dead and or broken. The aim of our project is to raise funds to be able to finance the building of the coral nurseries and a raft mechanism to bring out the artificial coral domes to sea, providing a spot for fish and coral to live.

OUR GOALS

REPAIR DAMAGED CORAL

Our main goal is to repair damage done to reefs in the North Tanga region by overfishing and dynamite fishing.

REPLENISH THE FOOD SOURCE FOR LOCALS

To work with the local BMU fishermen group and Mwambao NGO to create sustainable solutions to help the local fisherman have a livelihood and plentiful food.

A SUSTAINABLE SERVICE PROJECT

To create a sustainable service project which will outlast the original founding members time at UWCEA and make genuine impact on the lives of local fishermen and their families.

CORAL NURSERIES

To build and implement a system where damaged coral is collected, grown and transplanted to permanent structures to provide shelter for fish to thrive.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR

As a school team, we have managed to plan, design, develop and built a Raft Mechanism which is able to transport coral domes out to sea to use as an artificial habitat for the marine life around. This will allow this sand area to protect small fish and also for coral to grow and thrive. Furthermore we have also designed, developed and we built coral nurseries which have been placed in the ocean and awaiting coral to be planted. We are planning for more coral domes and nurseries to be built and also to be put out in the ocean.

BUILT AND PLACED CORAL NURSERIES

We have built, as a team 4 different types of Coral Nurseries which we have started placing in the ocean ready for the Coral to be placed and to start growing.

BUILT A RAFT MECHANISM TO TRANSPORT CORAL DOMES

We have designed and developed a raft mechanism which will allow us to transport big coral domes out to sea which allows marine life to start forming on the coral domes and also inside the habitat that it creates.

THE STORY OF UWCEA CORAL REEF CONSERVATION PROJECT

Founded in 2020

This project aims to preserve and rebuild the coral reef and marine life at Fish Eagle Point near Tanga on the coast of Tanzania.  The coast has been greatly affected by dynamite and drag net fishing and there is a huge amount of coral that is damaged, broken or dead. The aim of this project is to raise funds to be able to finance the building of new coral nurseries and artificial coral balls, which will be submerged in the ocean during the Reefs OP trips (Level 4 & Level 5), providing a spot for coral to grow and safe shelter for fish and marine life to live and thrive. During service on Wednesdays, we plan fundraisers to raise money to design and build things such as a new raft to move the coral balls, new coral nurseries and a swim through archway.  This service is closely linked to the Reefs OP trips and diving, so it would be advantageous if you have an interest in taking part in the Reefs OP trips and diving.  However, this is not obligatory but an interest in conservation and marine life is essential!
